Moses Keeps His Aaron

By Michael English

Summary: A simple dramatisation of Exodus 3. The Moses and sheep parts require careful timing to get them right. Don't let the sheep get too scornful or too loud.

Bible Reference: Exodus 3

Characters: Narrator, God, Moses, Several Sheep

Props: None - don't blame me if your burning bush doesn't work

Setting: The Wilderness of Midian

(Moses comes onto the stage - he is followed by two or more sheep.)

Narrator: Moses spent forty years looking after sheep and goats that belonged to his Father-in-law Jethro. But one day, out in the desert, something very unusual happened.

Moses: Okay, which of you sheep set fire to that bush. Come on, own up.

Sheep: Baaa....

Moses: We're staying here until one of you owns up.

Sheep: Baaa....

Moses: You're right. The fire isn't burning the bush. I'd better go over and see.

Narrator: God spoke to Moses from the middle of the bush.

God: Moses. Moses!

Moses: Stack me. A talking bush. Only God would do something like that. Here I am.

God: Do not come any closer. Take off your sandals, because you are standing on holy ground. I am the God of your ancestors, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

Narrator: Moses was terrified he hid his face in his hands and his knees began to knock. The sheep were pretty scared as well.

God: I have seen that the Egyptians have been treating my people cruelly. I know their sufferings. I am sending you to the king of Egypt, so that you can lead my people out of their country.

Moses: I am a useless nobody.

Sheep: Baa.

Moses: I couldn't do that.

God: I will be with you. My power will force Pharaoh to let you lead my people out of his territory.

Moses: I still feel pretty useless.

Sheep: Baa.

Moses: What if the Israelites don't listen to me?

God: I will give you the power of performing miracles. That will convince them.

Moses: Please, Lord, don't send me.

Sheep: Baa.

Moses: I still feel useless, when I speak the words are never quite what I meant.

God: You're right. But who made your tongue and your mouth? Who makes men deaf or hearing, blind or seeing? I will give you the words to speak.

Moses: No. Please send someone else.

Sheep: Baa.

Moses: Public speaking is something I just can't do.

God: Well have it your own way. Your brother Aaron is already a good speaker. I will appoint him to speak for me. I will tell you both what to do and help both of you to speak.
